Plateau

Across this vast plateau the elevation hovers mostly between the 8,800 to 10,000 foot range, while Brian Head Peak sits at 11,307 feet. Broad rolling hills, when not covered with pine and aspen trees, are clothed in grasses and flowers during the spring, summer, and fall.

The changing of the leaves in fall is as spectacular a display as you will find anywhere. Along the plateau Scenic Byway 143 move east from Cedar Breaks National Monument toward Panguitch Lake on the eastern slope.

Communities of private cabins dot the terrain along the byway, while most of the land is publicly owned and part of the Dixie National Forest. Wildlife such as deer, elk, bear, mountain lion, and bobcat are found across the plateau. Deer are commonly seen, while it is rare to catch a glimpse of the other large animals that make the Markagunt Plateau their home.
